back in like 1987, austin from jensen sportag emailed me on myspace and said that they were thinking i could maybe remix their new single sergio, but that i basically had to finish it in a couple days. the remix that ended up being released is pretty much exactly ‘as is.’ i loaded up the vocal and it just happened. it’s a pretty rough mix. i recorded the little arpeggio parts to cassette tape. everything just seemed to work.

been working on lots of new stuff. tons of new stuff. my bro jean paul just put out a new record (which you can grab here). he did a really badass remix of charles park for me, so i asked him if i could do a remix and return the favor. spent last week going back and forth and cutting things up. pretty happy with how this turned out.

grid is another b-side from the self-titled record. it just didn’t really fit in anywhere with the final tracklist. this jam is full of weird hs-60 synth parts and i think the bassline might be moog. i could be wrong. it was super long ago. i know this was written in thundercon. that explains a lot.

of all of the members of the protomen, the one that i’ve known the longest is probably dillon. i met him when we were still in school and pretty quickly determined that i wanted to make some type of music with him. this was way before there even was a protomen and long before i knew cal or wayne. dillon and i didn’t collaborate as much as we probably should have and really i just ended up giving him my minidisc recorder and a couple minidiscs and telling him to record his life for a few days with the idea that i would cut it into pieces and make songs out of it. these might not be the most traditional mavs jams, but they’re pretty near and dear to me. when i found them hidden on my hard drive i was pretty psyched. you also get to hear me sing lyrics that i was making up as i was singing them.

justin kase started making jams under the name fitout (and now as myrryrs). he’s had some releases (including this one on idiot house). he asked me to do a remix on one of his fitout releases. i did this literally in three hours one night. i went out and got a burrito and came home and made this jam. i was doing a lot of punch dancing while i was working on it.

there’s this girl from los angeles called tigarah who raps and like five years ago she had a remix contest which i failed to enter but ended up snagging the vocal tracks anyway and i made this jam out of them. i sent them off to her producer and we emailed back and forth a few times. seemed like a pretty nice dude. i used to play this jam all the time in my live sets but it’s part of this old school mavs catalog where everything is all rough and crazy.

anamanaguchi are super awesome dudes. they came through nashville and i played a show with them at the end on their 8-bit alliance tour and it was so much fun. epic amounts of fun. here’s a remix i did for them last year. it was up on 8-bit collective for a while but i don’t think i ever formally released it anyplace.

beast rider. my bros matt and paul had this band called german castro. they were amazing. we did a split where they had a couple jams that i remixed. this was one of them. i mastered it so it’s super ferocious now. seriously. the entire time i was making this jam, i was thinking about the attack sequence with the hawkmen in flash gordon. that was the inspiration 100%.

i used to live in a house with this band called the protomen. i lived there for a while. for a good chunk of the time that i lived there, commander and i had a secret studio set up in this unfinished room upstairs that we called the hawk’s nest. we had a bmx bike gang that mostly consisted of the two of us and we’d patrol the green hills mall parking lot late at night and guard our turf. we made a handful of hawks jams that were pretty unreleased. murphy got in on a few of them.

hawks intro is pretty self explanatory.

hawks! ride! is pretty rad because it was recorded mostly live and all of the arpeggios are pretty insane. all the drums were done with daniel’s korg drum machine thing that he was letting us use. everything was all midi sync’d. it was hella nerdy.

charles park 2 started off as a bunch of demos for an actual hawks album that never happened because protomen tour constantly and it was impossible to get cal to help me finish it. when i decided that the whole record would be this dark zombie themed deal, this demo got cut out because it was too triumphant sounding.

don’t stop was supposed to be the first track on the self titled record i put out last year. it used to have a sample at the beginning of sebastian in neverending story telling his dad that his horse drawings were actually unicorns. anyway, it’s a slow building bass jam. you put this on your ipod and jump on your bed while you listen to it. it’s a good jump on your bed jam.
